I
agree with the phrase in this article about there being a mismatch between
school and technology values. Technology has only continued to increase over
the years, while the basic structure of schools seems to have stayed the same.
The chapter goes on to explain how issues between school and technology include
tools, training, and space. Some new technologies like printers and active
boards have enhanced teaching and learning experiences through the object
itself and teachers’ adoption of it.
Children
being exposed to information via the internet that is not appropriate for them
is a common concern. A comment in this chapter that surprised me was, “students
engaging in internet dangers threatened the integrity of the school community.”
I did not realize that the school’s integrity was a concern with students
having access to technology and the internet.
My views on protecting students from inappropriate internet situations
is similar to providing bounded choice for texts. Preapproved website options
will allow students choice but protect them from other areas. Other concerns of
having laptops mentioned in this chapter are space and testing.
I love the comic that you chose! I feel that too much technology can be a problem. Students need to learn how to figure things out on their own. There will be problems that they need to solve and may not have a computer, smart phone, or technology to help them. At some point we need to teach students to be self-sufficient.
ReplyDeleteI, too, love that comic! So appropriate for today's kids! I agree that times have changed and some teachers haven't made the appropriate changes needed to keep up. I also commented on my blog about the comment on school integrity. It was interesting to me as well.
