This is a fun graphic that I think sums up some of the positive and exciting things about new literacies.
A
couple of phrases in this chapter really caught my attention. The quote that
the author gave of literacy being a matter of applying knowledge really
resonated with me. Comprehension is one thing, but the ability to apply
information is another and potentially deeper action.
The
identification of literacies through a socio-cultural perspective is
interesting too. It seems similar to how students identify themselves as being
readers of a particular book series like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games;
literacies and discourses can facilitate social groupings. Individual
background knowledge of students within these discourses will also yield multiple
understandings. As Knobel and Lankshear explain, here seems to be a strong
connection between social groups and literacies. With new literacies becoming
accepted genres, things like video games and websites are now connecting
different types of motivating and interesting literature.
Kelly, I also enjoyed reading the section about social discourses as well. It was interesting to read about their social environment affects them so deeply. I also discussed accepting video games as a genre in my blog. It is amazing to see how far we have come in this technological age.

ReplyDeleteI too used a word art graphic for this blog post. I think it's neat how these 'new literacies' affect reading and comprehension in such a powerful way. I agree that students identify themselves as being part of different social groups based upon what they are reading.
